Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Social media activism has emerged as a powerful tool for advocacy and citizen engagement, influencing public opinion and shaping narratives on critical social issues. Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have enabled individuals to challenge traditional power structures, promote causes, and demand accountability. However, this rise in social media activism has significant implications for traditional media ethics, particularly in regions like Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State. Journalists often face pressure to align with popular social media narratives, which can sometimes lead to compromises in accuracy, impartiality, and depth of reporting (Oluwaseun & Musa, 2023). While social media activism fosters inclusivity and diversity of perspectives, its immediacy and lack of editorial oversight can lead to the spread of misinformation or sensationalism (Abdullahi, 2024). This study investigates how social media activism influences traditional media ethics in Makurdi, focusing on the challenges and opportunities it presents for responsible journalism.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The convergence of social media activism and traditional journalism has created ethical dilemmas for media practitioners in Makurdi. On one hand, social media platforms provide journalists with real-time information and diverse viewpoints; on the other, they exert pressure to prioritize speed over accuracy and popularity over credibility (Ahmed & Ibrahim, 2023). This tension undermines core ethical principles of journalism, such as fairness and accountability, leading to a decline in public trust in traditional media. Despite its growing relevance, there is limited research on how social media activism affects traditional media ethics in Makurdi. This study seeks to bridge this gap by exploring the interplay between these dynamics and offering recommendations for ethical journalism in the age of social media.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the influence of social media activism on traditional media ethics in Makurdi.

  2. To identify the challenges faced by traditional journalists in navigating social media pressures.

  3. To propose strategies for maintaining ethical standards in traditional media amidst social media activism.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does social media activism influence traditional media ethics in Makurdi?

  2. What challenges do traditional journalists face in adapting to social media dynamics?

  3. What strategies can ensure ethical journalism in the context of social media activism?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Social media activism significantly influences traditional media ethics in Makurdi.

  2. Journalists face ethical challenges due to the pressures of social media dynamics.

  3. Adopting strategies to balance social media trends and traditional ethics can enhance journalistic integrity.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the impact of social media activism on traditional media ethics, a critical issue in today’s evolving media landscape. By focusing on Makurdi, the research provides localized insights into how journalists navigate ethical dilemmas in an era of digital transformation. The findings will benefit media practitioners, policymakers, and scholars by offering practical recommendations for upholding ethical standards while leveraging the benefits of social media activism.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the influence of social media activism on traditional media ethics in Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State. It does not cover broader trends beyond the specified region or media type.
